This pattern was originally published on my sewing blog in August 2020, but has been moved here to make it easier for you to find and enjoy.

I tend to run out hands, as one does when one only has two hands, two kids, and at least one cup of coffee. This awesome homemade lanyard comes in totally handy (get it!) when we're out and about!

You'll love how quick and easy this project is with my free printable sewing pattern and full photo tutorial.

Make them for you, make them to give as gifts! Either way, you gotta make 'em!

This project is dedicated to a helping hand.

Tips + Tricks

No 1. >> Cut your fabric from selvage to selvage. Usually when you're working with woven fabrics, they are 44" or 54" inches wide, and our pattern is approximately 39" this is the easiest way to cut!

No. 2 >> Sew this entire pattern with a 1/4" seam allowance.

No. 3 >> I looked EVERYWHERE locally to find these swivel clasps. They were nowhere to be found, BUT I did find the motherlode on Amazon. Looks like everyone on my list is getting an Archie Lanyard for Christmas! Haha.

No. 4 >> Hate cutting rectangles based on measurements? Me too, fill in the form below and I'll send you the pattern! The pattern comes with a complete photo tutorial and extra information not included in this post.

How To Make A Homemade Lanyard

  • 3/4" D loop with swivel clasp
  • Thread

Tools

Instructions

  1. If you prefer a printed pattern, fill in the form above and I'll send you the PDF file.
  2. Run a flexible tape measure around your neck, and choose your determined length. Cut along the marked line for your desired size.
PATTERN: If lengthening or shortening is required, divide the desired difference by 2 then add or subtract from the strap pattern piece.
NO PATTERN: Decide on the desired length.
  3. PATTERN: Cut one STRAP in both main and lining fabric on the fold as marked. This can be the same or contrasting fabric.  Cut one TAB, this can be the same or contrasting fabric.
NO PATTERN: Cut one STRAP in each the main and lining fabric. The strap is equal to the desired length x 1.5" wide. The TAB is cut at 1.5" x 4".
  1. Pin or clip the strap pieces right sides together. Sew both LONG sides with a 1/4” seam allowance.
  2. Using a tube turner, turn your strap right side out. Then press well.
  1. Topstitch both sides of the strap 1/4” from the pressed edge. A 1/4” seam foot is very convenient for this! I use a #4 straight stitch for my topstitching.
  2. Slide the swivel clasp onto the lanyard. Then stack the raw edges of the strap, the right side of one end touching the wrong side of the other one. Sewing the lanyard this way ensures your clip lays flat against your body.  Sew the end of the straps together with a 1/8” to 1/4” seam allowance. The smaller the better.
  1. Press the long sides of the tab to the middle.  Lay the lanyard with the seam side down and the D-loop about 1” away from the seam. Slide the tab, wrong side up, under the seam. Fold the tab up over the top of the seam, clip in place. Close the lanyard, keeping the D-loop on the short side of the tab. Fold the tab over the top side of the strap. Clip the tab over top of the right side of the lanyard. Fold the remaining edge of the tab in between the two lanyard layers.
  2. Run a couple of hand-basted stitches through the tab to keep it all in place before sewing.  Then sew around the edge of the tab. I like to use a stitch length of 4.
