I spent much of last week working on the pattern draft for this slouch beanie. I tried a few variations and fabrics, tweaked the sizing, stitch ripped, and sewed together again. I was thrilled with the result.

Then to be really sure, I brought a handful of them out to the lake lot for our end-of-summer, final-hoorah! I knew the weather would be cool, but I didn't think it would be single digits for most of the weekend.

Needless to say, these DIY slouchy beanies were well worn by everyone out there. I got more than a few requests for these beanies for Christmas. The lake crew is getting Ryleys this year in their stocking!

This pattern is dedicated to late-season lake nights spent around the fire.

Tips + Tricks

No. 1 >> Be thoughtful when picking your fabric. A thicker rib knit will have more body and less slouch than a silky bamboo lycra. The fabric will impact the final look and feel of the hat, so it's a good idea to be mindful!

Oh, did i mention?

This free slouchy beanie moonlights as a cuffed beanie, messy bun hat, neckwarmer and a face-covering! Bonus!

Required Materials

This pattern needs 3/4 yard of knit fabric with at least 20% stretch. It is drafted to have a small amount of negative ease to keep it comfortably snug and on your head.

IF you like, you can easily attach a pom pom to the twist on this hat, but sewing the twist closed to attach a pom pom will make it only a toque - no neckie or face warmer.
